General information about borrowing

  • Students in ES1 and Stage 1 (Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2) must have a library bag or satchel with them when they return and/or borrow books. All other students are encouraged to do the same in order to protect the books and keep them safe.
  • Shoal Bay library satchels are available at Bella Rose Boutique and can be purchased when buying uniforms, *any type of waterproof bag is also suitable.
  • All loans are for a period of 2 weeks, although students are encouraged to return books each week. Loans may be renewed if necessary.
  • Students are responsible for the books they borrow.
  • If a book is lost it must be paid for. Lost books have been known to turn up in some funny places so replacement costs will only be sought, after a thorough search of the library, classroom and with your assistance, home.
  • A damaged book must be returned to the library for repair. Please do not repair books at home as we use special materials and particular techniques. If a book is beyond repair replacement costs maybe sought.

You can assist in keeping library books safe by discussing book care with your children and suggesting a safe place to keep the library books at home.

Library opening times

Although students only visit the library once a week with their class, they may borrow more frequently.  They can do so when the library is open during lunch.

Monday - Friday: 11:35am - 12:00pm

The library is open for students to borrow books, read, draw/colour in; access computers (Monday – Thursday) and play with Lego, puppets, complete jigsaw puzzles or play board games.

Library at lunchtimes

As part of the school's leadership program a number of Year 5 students are official library monitors. They do a great job helping other students, sorting and shelving books, organising the resources and generally helping with whatever needs to be done.  They have a lunchtime roster to follow.

Book club

Scholastic book club is a great opportunity for students and parents to purchase educational materials and great books to read. Scholastic donates a percentage of the money spent back to the school and we use it buy many great resources and books for our library. There are 8 issues in a year.

Because Shoal Bay Public School is a loop school, parents can order and pay for book club orders online alternatively we still take cash orders (or eftpos) at the front office.  There is a loop app for mobile devices available at the app store.

Premiers reading challenge

This year students in years K-2 will automatically be entered into the premiers reading challenge (5 March to 31 August) through the reading that they do in class and in library lessons. Students in 3-6 can choose to do the challenge and can enter the books they have read through the link on their student portal page. You can check out the booklists and learn more on premiers reading challenge.

Birthday book club

This year as to further involve our students in the celebration of books and reading, we are continuing birthday book club. For a donation of $10 your child can choose a book to give to the library, from a great selection of new and popular titles. The birthday book your child selects will feature a special bookplate with your child's name and birthday. The selected book will be presented to your child, for first loan, at assembly and a photo will be taken for display on the website, in the library and sometimes in snippets.

When the book is returned, goes into the library for everyone to read and/or borrow. (A gift that keeps on giving!)

If you would like your child to participate in birthday book club, please complete the letter (available on the letters page of the website, or from the school office) and return with payment to the school office.

Our birthday book club pictures are regularly updated on our facebook page.

Book Fairs

A good book fair helps our school stock up on resources to enrich your children's education. Best of all, a Book Fair provides kids access to more books. More books means more choice, which means kids get to read the books they want to read.

The right book can ignite a passion for reading (which is what we are all about in the library).
